Light Hairlines, Plays Through

Warm, widescreen instrumental hip-hop. Beats and fragments pulled from a vast archive: soulful loops, dusty breaks, vocal samples and live instruments. In the vein of RJD2 and AIM.

“Light hairlines, plays through” is how record sellers grade a used record. Faint surface marks, no skips.

About

North London,
by way of Brighton

Soulful Spider is producer Daniel Moross: North London born and bred, turning dusty records and stray sounds into beats.

It began with a teenage band, then a Fostex four-track in his bedroom, where he tinkered with sounds and samples and made lo-fi loops and beats from his dad’s CD collection.

At university in Brighton he met producers, MCs and DJs who got him DJing at house parties, student nights and clubs. That scene produced Infinite Potential: Soulful Spider and Kojak, with frontmen Amber MC and Dizraeli. They released two EPs on Catskills Records to acclaim in the UK hip-hop scene, with rave reviews, radio play and live bookings at UK venues. Later they formed the IP Band with lead vocals from LeaLea Jones, performing at Ronnie Scott’s and recording for BBC Introducing at Maida Vale Studios.

He has since produced on every album in Canadian rapper Baba Brinkman’s Rap Guide series. The Rap Guide to Consciousness played off-Broadway at New York’s Soho Playhouse.

The new album, Light Hairlines, Plays Through, is his first solo release.

Reviews

What people say

A tight EP heavily recalling the old school vibe of Black Sheep, but with progressing contemporary technique.

Review of As The Record Revolves, 2004

About half the tracks here are instrumentals where Kojak is unleashed on a variety of these samples over Spider’s memorable beats.

Review of As The Record Revolves, 2004

One of the most exciting and original teams to emerge from the steadily growing Hip-Hop scene in the UK.

Catskills Records, label notes

The subdued shindig ‘La Entrada’ shows off some Latin-themed footwork and the title track gets deeper in thought.

Review of Open Up Your Mind, 2005

Like listening to a cross between Shakespeare and Mike Skinner… a joyful experience.

The Scotsman on The Rebel Cell, four stars

High-octane lyrical content… a cerebral, savvy production that explores our modern social contract with vivacity and zeal.
